Couples and Family Therapy
The goal of Couples and Family Therapy is to improve intimate relationships. The focus is usually on helping people understand and help each other. It is a powerful tool in mediation of communication problems and conflicts. Sometimes the very presence of a neutral and skilled professional helps improve understanding and communication between spouses or family members, even when the situation seems to be hopeless.
Many times, our problems are created when we react to present situations on "autopilot" because of things that have hurt us in the past. For example, adults who as children could not have afforded to be weak, because their parents needed them to be strong, would not allow themselves to be weak in an adult relationship. Therefore, when they hurt their spouses they never apologize or take responsibility. The point of view of a professional can help identify these patterns in the room and react to them appropriately.
The advantage of couples and family therapy is, therefore, that the client does not need to describe the problematic patterns from their point of view - they are as present in the room just as they are in the relationship. In this way, couples or family therapy can enable direct and effective coping with personal issues that hinder us from meeting our potential in relationships as well as in other areas of life.
